Science Programme

The science programme has been really successful. We have surveyed two king penguin colonies; one of which took a two day expedition to get there…adventure science at its best! The glaciology has been superb with three glacier snouts surveyed using GPS. One was surveyed while carrying full camping and mountaineering equipment on our backs. Who says science is easy!?

Hannah has been doing sterling work in spotting and logging South Georgia Pintails. We saw one pair with a chick and noted that down only to find that the chick had been eaten by a skua half an hour later! Clare has been fantastic at finding and collecting ferns for the Natural History Museum. There should be plenty for them to analyse when we bring them home.

The meteorology of South Georgia is fantastic with amazing cloud formations and very strong winds, which we have experienced to their full! The weather station stayed up for a couple of days before the fur seals decided that they didn’t like it on their beach and knocked it down.

The search for Shackleton’s stove was taken up enthusiastically. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to find it, but I suppose we have to leave something for next year’s expedition.
