Challenges on South Georgia
As we’re about to leave for South Georgia (weather permitting), here’s a list of the surveys and activities we’ll be doing while we’re there:
1. Glaciology
We will produce an accurate map with GPS positions of the present icefront of the Konig glacier and any previous icefront positions from air photos and ground photos.
2. King Penguin Survey
We’ll count and GPS map the King Penguin colony in Fortuna Bay.
3. The search for Shackleton’s stove
We’ll search for the stove which Shackleton discarded on Windbreak Ridge during his epic trip across South Geogia in 1916. A previous BSES expedition attempted to find the stove without success. A metal detector has been donated by Minelab for the project.
