Barren by name...
We are back in Stanley (Falkland Islands) after spending 5 days on George and Barren Islands doing a mixture of conservation and science. We carried out several bird surveys to monitor the regeneration of the tussac grass we planted. We also collected quite a few spider samples. Barren is as it sounds and the wind fair whistles through; the farmer there uses his wind turbine to great effect. Everyone is looking a bit sunburnt, due to the thin ozone layer in the Southern Hemisphere, especially at this time of year.
The next stage is to sail to South Georgia from the Falklands. It’s been really windy here, so we’ll see plenty of waves and, no doubt, be astounded by the power and forces involved. We are settled into the yachts, but are waiting for a couple of storms to clear before we set off. The meteorology/weather is certainly interesting!
